Gift Acceptance Policy
Texas Alliance for Youth Success (TAFYS)
Effective: June 1, 2025
Purpose
This policy outlines the types of gifts TAFYS may accept and the conditions under which gifts are accepted. It ensures all gifts align with our mission and values and protects the integrity and reputation of TAFYS.
Scope
This policy applies to all donations made to TAFYS, including cash, in-kind contributions, securities, real estate, and other forms of support.
Gift Acceptance Guidelines
Acceptable Gifts
TAFYS may accept the following types of gifts, subject to review:
- Cash and checks
- Credit card payments and online donations
- In-kind donations (goods or services that directly support TAFYS programs)
- Publicly traded securities
- Real property (upon board review and due diligence)
- Personal property (art, equipment, etc., if useful or sellable)
- Bequests and beneficiary designations
- Gifts from donor-advised funds and foundations
- Gifts such as hygiene items, clothes, and shoes, etc., must be new.
Conditional or Restricted Gifts
TAFYS may accept restricted gifts if:
- The restriction aligns with TAFYS’s mission and programs.
- The restriction is not overly burdensome to administer.
- The Board of Directors or designated committee approves the terms.
We reserve the right to respectfully decline gifts that:
- Are inconsistent with our mission or values.
- Involve unacceptable restrictions or liabilities.
- Could damage the reputation of the organization.
- Are incompatible between the intent of the donor and TAFYS’s use of the gift
- Are not consistent with prior practice
- Discourage future giving
Valuation and Acknowledgment
- Donors are responsible for determining the value of non-cash contributions for tax purposes.
- TAFYS will provide written acknowledgments for all gifts, in compliance with IRS regulations.
- Gifts valued over $5,000 may require a donor-provided qualified appraisal.
Recognition
TAFYS may publicly recognize donors unless the donor requests anonymity. Recognition will comply with donor intent and any applicable privacy laws.
Oversight and Review
- The Board of Directors shall review and approve any non-standard or complex gifts.
- This policy will be reviewed annually and revised as needed.
