This April, TAFYS is joining advocates across the country to recognize the inaugural National Sibling Connections Awareness Month.

For too many youth in foster care, sibling separation is a hidden crisis. Sibling relationships provide stability, identity, and lifelong connection. Yet these bonds are often disrupted by placement changes and system barriers. This month, we’re working together to ensure sibling connections are no longer the forgotten relationship in foster care.

Up to 75% of siblings in foster care experience separation during their time in care. Sibling relationships are often the longest-lasting bonds in a person's life.

Why Sibling Connections Matter

For young people in foster care, siblings can provide:

  • emotional support and comfort

  • a sense of identity and belonging

  • shared history and cultural connection

  • stability during times of change

Protecting sibling connections helps strengthen youth well-being, resilience, and long-term outcomes.

During National Sibling Connections Awareness Month, we’re amplifying the voices of youth, caregivers, advocates, and organizations working to protect these critical relationships.
